NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II

The NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II allows the audiologist to reduce the time of testing in cases where the patient has essentially normal word recognition ability.  It is the result of recent research on our original recording by Raymond Hurley and Janet Sells.

The lists are ordered from the most difficult to the easiest.  With normal listeners the test can often be terminated after the first 10 words.  This is not a half list; however, there is a provision for termination of the test after 25 words in addition to after the first 10 words.

The NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and list. The one-page instructions include method, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data is included, but it is not age specific. Available from Auditec, Inc Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to contiguous US.

[NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II; Item 211; Price $84.50 USD + S&H]

[NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II Short Interval*; Item 211SI; Price $84.50 USD + S&H]

[Spondees, NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty V. II; Item 279; Price $106.00 USD+S&H]

*What is the short interval version and is it right for your patients? The standard amount of time given for the patient to respond is approximately four seconds. Short-interval versions only give the patient 2.5 seconds for the patient to  respond. It is an effective way to speed up administration time, but this version is not recommended for young children or the elderly.

What is the difference between the NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version I and the NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II? The NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version I consists of 7 lists of 25 words each. The examiner can either terminate the test after the first 10 words or complete all 25 words in the list. This does not include instructions. The NU-6 Ordered by Difficulty Version II is based on later research. It consists of 4 lists of 50 words each. The examiner can either terminate the test after the first 10 or after 25 words or complete all 50 words in the list. It includes instructions.

PSI

The Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Test is a test for children ages 3 to 6. It fits in two important auditory processing domains. It can be categorized as both a dichotic test and a monaural low-redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem.

The importance of speech audiometry, especially where the test materials include both monosyllabic words and sentences, has been well established for adults. Experience with performance vs. intensity (PI) functions and message to competition ratio (MCR) functions with adults led to the development of an analogous test for children; the Pediatric Speech Intelligibility (PSI) test.

The PSI includes both monosyllabic words and sentences recorded in quiet and with competition (auditory figure ground). The test employs color plates with pictures of animals (animals were use to avoid ethnic biases) which represent either the sentences or the words. It is an extremely useful tool for the investigation of peripheral and auditory processing with children down to a language age of three or slightly younger.

The test includes: a) corresponding laminated color plates, b) audio test recording, and c) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. This extensive manual includes background, administration, and interpretation information including normative data for young children. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to contiguous US.

[Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Standard* Version; Item 183; Price $299.00 USD + S&H]

[Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Basic* Version; Item 184; Price $219.75 USD + S&H]

*What is the difference between the standard and basic version? Auditec recommends purchasing the PSI – Standard Version, which is the full test. It includes two sets of sentence materials which allows for re-testing without having to use the same sentences. However, Auditec also offers the PSI – Basic Version for those with budget restraints. The PSI – Basic Version includes only one set of sentences and should be used on patients who will be tested once.  (The PSI – Standard Version includes the PSI – Basic Version so it is unnecessary to buy both versions.)

*What is the difference between the WIPI First Edition and WIPI Second Edition?

  1. The original authors of the WIPI developed a second edition to clear up the ambiguity of the first edition. In some cases the picture contains a more modern depiction, such as the coke bottle is now 2-liter bottle. About one picture per page was changed.
  2. The word list was changed. Therefore, the WIPI recording must correspond to the correct version.
  3. The WIPI First Edition is available only on CD-Rom. Picture CD-Roms are designed to be displayed on a computer screen; however, customers may print the pictures and place them in a three-ring binder. WIPI pictures must be printed in color to obtain accurate test results. The WIPI Second Edition is available either or CD-Rom or as a printed book.
  4. If you are unsure whether you own the first or second edition, check the color of the cover. If you own one of the old printed WIPI First Edition books, the cover will be either blue or green. The WIPI Second Edition is a dark red/ maroon color.

Does Auditec offer a picture-pointing test for young children in other languages? No, consider employing a test with nonverbal stimuli such as the Sound Effects Recognition Test.

The WIPI is available from Auditec, Inc.
