This is not an exhaustive list. Other speech in noise tests appear in Auditec’s catalog. Go to Auditec’s alphabetical price list to search for a specific test or email auditecinfo@auditec.com for further assistance.

QuickSIN

The QuickSIN is a speech in noise recording. It consists of sentences recorded in four-talker noise. There are twelve sets of sentences with six sentences in each set. Each set includes one sentence at each of the following signal-to-noise ratios: 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, and 0 dB. Every sentence has five key words that are scored as correct or incorrect. The lists are equivalent and provide a quick and accurate assessment of hearing aid performance.

The QuickSIN is modification of the SIN and, as the title suggests, is a shorter version of the SIN. It is appropriate for most adults. See BKB-SIN for a similar test for children.

The QuickSIN includes a) auditory test recording, and b) manual and score forms. The extensive manual contains information on administration, scoring, and interpretation. Normative data for adults is included. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order.

BKB-SIN

The BKB-SIN test is a speech in noise test for children. It was developed for children (ages 5 and up), cochlear implant patients, and adults for whom the QuickSIN test is too difficult. Other uses include: demonstrating the benefits of amplification, predicting performance with hearing aids in loud, noisy environments, assessing directional microphone performance, estimating children’s performance for soft speech, and screening for auditory processing disorders in children.

The BKB-SIN uses 18 equivalent list pairs for estimating SNR loss. It features Bramford-Kowal-Bench sentences in four talker babble, uses easier sentences than the QuickSIN, and has norms for children, adults, and cochlear implant users. CD 1 (Standard BKB-SIN) has the target talker and background babble recorded on the same channel of the CD, at pre-recorded signal-to-noise ratios.  CD 2 (Split Track BKB-SIN) has the target talker and background babble recorded on separate channels of the CD.

The BKB-SIN includes a) audio recording (CD1 and CD2), and b) manual and score forms. The 27-page manual is comprised of administration, interpretation, and development. Normative data for ages 5 and up is included. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order.

SPRINT

SPRINT is a speech in noise test.  It consists of four monosyllabic word lists with noise. The recording uses the NU-6 Form C word list mixed with Multi-Talker Noise at a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of +9 dB. Children may be unfamiliar with the vocabulary of this adult word list. Therefore, it may be necessary to use a speech in noise test designed for children such as the PBK in Noise (words in noise) or BKB-SIN (sentences in noise).

The SPRINT includes a) audio recording, and b) informational sheet and word list. An informational sheet is provided to assist in the interpretation of adult patients. This test does not include instructions. It is assumed that purchasers of Auditec’s products are well trained in their use, purpose, and interpretation. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order.

NU-6 Opposite Noise

The NU-6 opposite noise recordings are considered speech in noise. The lists are available with either either Cafeteria Noise, Four-Talker Noise, or Multi-talker Noise as competition. The primary signal (word list) is recorded on the left track, the competition on the right.

These recordings include the: a) audio recording, and b) word list. This product does not include administration instructions or normative data. It is assumed that purchasers of Auditec’s products are well trained in their use, purpose, and interpretation. Available from Auditec, Inc.  Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping within the contiguous US.

W-22 Opposite Noise

W-22 lists are available with either Cafeteria Noise, Four-Talker Noise, or Multi-talker Noise as competition. The primary signal (word list) is recorded on the left track, the competition on the right.

These recordings include the: a) audio recording, and b) word list. This product does not include instructions or normative data. It is assumed that purchasers of Auditec’s products are well trained in their use, purpose, and interpretation. SIN

The Speech in Noise (SIN) test was developed to help determine how much a given hearing aid or pair of hearing aids helps an individual understand speech in a background of noise, compared to listening unaided or with other hearing aids. The test consists of a series of female-talker recordings of the IEEE (modified Harvard) sentences as the target speech, and four-talker babble (three women and one man) as the noise source. Five sentences are recorded at each of four signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios: 15 dB, 10 dB, 5 dB and 0 dB S/N, all at the 0 dB VU meter calibration level, followed by a similar series recorded at a signal level 30 dB lower than the calibration level (-30 dB re 0 VU).

Therefore, there are 20 sentences at each level for a total of 40 sentences (or 4 IEEE lists), all of which constitutes a block. There are nine blocks of the SIN test, so that nine comparisons can be made without repeating sentences.

*The Speech in Noise includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files on CD-Rom. The instructions provide information on administration. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order.

Speech in Noise is Item No. CD102-9 and costs $50.00 USD + S&H FREE shipping within the contiguous US.

*The QuickSIN and BKB-SIN are considered more recent versions of this test. Although the more recent versions are preferred by most professionals, ghe SIN still proves to be useful to some audiologists.
