Dichotic Digits – Standard Version

The Dichotic Digits-Standard version test is an auditory processing disorder test using verbal stimuli. It is considered a dichotic test for binaural integration sensitive to brainstem, cortical, and corpus callosal lesions.

This established test assesses the ability to process different materials arriving at the ears simultaneously. Fifty sets of digits, one through nine (except seven, having two syllables) are presented either in single pairs or double pairs. The digits begin and end simultaneously.

Dichotic Digits-Standard version includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The one-page instructions consist of administration, scoring, and interpretation information. Normative data* for double digits is included; however, it is only available for ages 11 and up. Available from Auditec, IncCall 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to the contiguous US.

Dichotic Digits-Musiek Version

The Dichotic Digits test is an auditory processing disorder test for ages 7 and up using verbal stimuli. It is considered a dichotic test for binaural integration sensitive to brainstem, cortical, and corpus callosal lesions.

Dichotic Digits – Musiek version is a test by Dr. Frank Musiek. It is similar to the Dichotic Digits standard version.  That is, digits from one to ten are presented dichotically.  One set is single pair; the second is double pair.  Usually, the single pair set is for practice. Dichotic Digits-Musiek version includes the digit “seven.” In contrast, the standard version does not include the digit “seven” since it is a two syllable word in contrast to the other nine digits. The Dichotic Digits-Musiek version includes age-specific normative data on double digits for ages 7 and up. The standard version includes normative data on double digits for ages 11 and up.

Is the Musiek version or standard version better? Neither version is considered better. Both versions sell popularly and are widely used. Decisions are mainly based on which version the audiologist was originally trained in or by personal preference. Due to the similarities between the standard and Musiek versions, it is usually unnecessary to purchase both versions.

Musiek Dichotic Digits includes a) audio recording, and b) instructions and score form as printable pdf files.  The two-page instructions consist of administration, scoring, and interpretation information. It includes age-specific normative data on double digits for ages 7 and up. Available from Auditec, Inc.  Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. PSI

The Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Test is a test for children ages 3 to 6. It fits in two important auditory processing domains. It can be categorized as both a dichotic test and a monaural low-redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem.

The importance of speech audiometry, especially where the test materials include both monosyllabic words and sentences, has been well established for adults. Experience with performance vs. intensity (PI) functions and message to competition ratio (MCR) functions with adults led to the development of an analogous test for children; the Pediatric Speech Intelligibility (PSI) test.

The PSI includes both monosyllabic words and sentences recorded in quiet and with competition (auditory figure ground). The test employs color plates with pictures of animals (animals were use to avoid ethnic biases) which represent either the sentences or the words. It is an extremely useful tool for the investigation of peripheral and auditory processing with children down to a language age of three or slightly younger.

The test includes: a) corresponding laminated color plates, b) audio test recording, and c) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. This extensive manual includes background, administration, and interpretation information including normative data for young children. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to contiguous US.

[Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Standard* Version; Item 183; Price $299.00 USD + S&H]

[Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Basic* Version; Item 184; Price $219.75 USD + S&H]

*What is the difference between the standard and basic version? Auditec recommends purchasing the PSI – Standard Version, which is the full test. It includes two sets of sentence materials which allows for re-testing without having to use the same sentences. However, Auditec also offers the PSI – Basic Version for those with budget restraints. The PSI – Basic Version includes only one set of sentences and should be used on patients who will be tested once.  (The PSI – Standard Version includes the PSI – Basic Version so it is unnecessary to buy both versions.)

Spanish SSW

The Spanish Staggered Spondaic Word test is a central processing test. It is a dichotic test using binaural integration sensitive to brainstem and cortical lesions. patterned after the Staggered Spondaic Word (SSW) test by Katz. Administration, scoring and interpretation information is included in the extensive manual (in Spanish).

The Spanish SSW includes: a) audio recording, and b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. The extensive manual is provided in the Spanish language only. It includes administration, scoring, and interpretation information. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to the contiguous US.

Competing Sentences

The Competing Sentences is popular with both psychologists and audiologists. It is an auditory processing disorder test and is considered a dichotic sentence test for binaural separation sensitive to neuromaturation and language processing. It uses verbal stimuli and is appropriate for ages 5 and older. It consists of 30 pairs of sentences with similar subject matter within each sentence pair. These sentences were recorded so that each pair begins and ends simultaneously.

Competing Sentences includes: a) audio recording, and b) instructions and sentence list. The two-page instructions encompass format, procedure, and interpretation. Normative data for ages 5 and over is included. Available from Auditec, Inc.   Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping within the contiguous US.

Dichotic Word Listening Test

The Dichotic Word Listening Test (DWLT) is popular with audiologists and psychologists. It is often considered an auditory processing disorder test. It was developed specifically to demonstrate relative unilateral extinction or suppressions in neurologic patients with focal electrophysiological lesions, neuropsychiatric patients whose symptoms are presumed to be associated with underlying electrophysiological dysfunction and patients with so-called “subclinical” EEG abnormalities following closed head injury. Since observations indicate that multiple neuropathological processes impair dichotic listening performance, the DWLT may prove relevant to investigation of brainstem disorders, subcortical lesions, etc.

The DWLT stimuli are common words varying in length from one to three syllables.  The test is in two equivalent parts with 10 practice items and 30 test items in each part.

The Dichotic Word Listening Test includes a) audio recording, b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. The five-page instructions consist of background, administration, scoring, and interpretation. The instructions include grade-specific normative data for kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, and sixth grades as well as adults. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to the contiguous US.
