The Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Test is a test for children ages 3 to 6. It fits in two important auditory processing domains. It can be categorized as both a dichotic test and a monaural low-redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem.
The importance of speech audiometry, especially where the test materials include both monosyllabic words and sentences, has been well established for adults. Experience with performance vs. intensity (PI) functions and message to competition ratio (MCR) functions with adults led to the development of an analogous test for children; the Pediatric Speech Intelligibility (PSI) test.
The PSI includes both monosyllabic words and sentences recorded in quiet and with competition (auditory figure ground). The test employs color plates with pictures of animals (animals were use to avoid ethnic biases) which represent either the sentences or the words. It is an extremely useful tool for the investigation of peripheral and auditory processing with children down to a language age of three or slightly younger.
The test includes: a) corresponding laminated color plates, b) audio test recording, and c) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. This extensive manual includes background, administration, and interpretation information including normative data for young children. Available from Auditec, Inc. [Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Standard* Version; Item 183; Price $299.00 USD + S&H]
[Pediatric Speech Intelligibility Basic* Version; Item 184; Price $219.75 USD + S&H]
*What is the difference between the standard and basic version? Auditec recommends purchasing the PSI – Standard Version, which is the full test. It includes two sets of sentence materials which allows for re-testing without having to use the same sentences. However, Auditec also offers the PSI – Basic Version for those with budget restraints. The PSI – Basic Version includes only one set of sentences and should be used on patients who will be tested once. (The PSI – Standard Version includes the PSI – Basic Version so it is unnecessary to buy both versions.)
The Selective Auditory Attention Test (SAAT) is an auditory processing disorder test for ages 4-9. It is considered a monaural low-redundancy speech test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem. This auditory figure ground test that was developed to aid in the early identification of young children who have poor ability to attend (attention deficit), especially in noise.
The SAAT is a closed-set, picture-pointing task, employing the WIPI, 1st ed. words and pictures. SAAT consists of two parts, two lists of WIPI words in quiet and two lists imbedded (mixed) in a semantic distracter, which is a competing message (an interesting story). The signal-to-noise ratio is a nominal 0 dB.
The SAAT should be given in a moderately quiet environment either through earphones or over a loudspeaker. Normative data for children from age four to nine are included in the manual.
The SAAT includes: a) audio recording, b) manual and score forms as printable pdf files. This extensive manual contains information on administration, scoring, and interpretation. Grade-specific normative data is included for pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade. This item now also includes the WIPI 1st Picture CD-Rom (a $75.00 value!). Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping to contiguous US.

[ACAP Battery includes Dichotic Digits-Standard, Duration Pattern Sequence-Standard, Dichotic Word Listening Test, Masking Level Difference-Tone, NU-6 Low Pass Filtered at 750 Hz, Time Compressed Sentence Test, Random Gap Detection Test, Selective Auditory Attention Test, and Competing Sentences combined on one CD; Item CD115-9; Price $549.00 USD + S&H]
The Synthetic Sentence Identification (SSI) can be used to: a) test speech intelligibility, b) test central auditory function, and c) evaluate hearing aid performance. It is considered appropriate for ages 11 and up. The SSI uses contralateral or ipsilateral competition. The primary signal consists of ten synthetic sentences. The competition is a male talker reading a passage.
Auditec has recorded FOUR versions*:
1. Contralateral competition (SSI CCM): This is a dichotic test using binaural integration sensitive to cortical vs. brain stem lesions. The sentences are on the left track (channel) and the competition is on the right. This is the SSI Contralateral Competing Message version; Item 123; Price $104.75 USD + S&H.
2. Ipsilateral competition (SSI ICM)*: This is considered a monaural low-redundancy test (monaural separation closure-MSC) sensitive to low brainstem lesions. It is an auditory figure ground test. Both the sentences and competition are recorded on one track (channel) at various message-to-competition ratios (MCR) or signal-to-noise ratios (S/N).
- SSI-ICM -20 – +10. The MCRs are mixed -20, -10, 0, +10, -20, -10, 0, +10, 0, & 0 dB per set of 10. This is the SSI Ipsilateral Competing Message version; Item 136; Price $104.75 USD + S&H.
- SSI-ICM +10 – -20. Here the MCRs begin with +10 and progress to -20 dB similar to (a.) above. This is the SSI Ipsilateral Competition, Reverse Order; Item 160; Price $104.75 USD + S&H.
- SSI-ICM +10 – 0. The first two sets of sentences are recorded at +10 dB MCR, the remaining eight at 0 dB MCR. This is the SSI Ipsilateral Competition, +10 & 0 MCR; Item 161; Price $104.75 USD + S&H.
*NOTE: Each version is sold separately; therefore, it is necessary to specify the version or item number when ordering. It may be unnecessary to purchase the Contralateral and Ipsilateral versions since the administrator can mix the channels at various signal-to-noise ratios using a dual-channel audiometer.
The Synthetic Sentence Identification includes: a) audio test recording, b) instructions and score forms as printable pdf files. Normative data is included for hearing aid evaluation only. No normative data is included for the central auditory function; however, the audiologist can uncover useful insight by comparing the patient’s performance on the contralateral and ipsilateral presentations. Available from Auditec, Inc. Call 1-800-669-9065 (from US) or 314-416-1050 (outside the US) to order. FREE shipping within the contiguous US.
